Tech Tips

As promised we will talk about changing your cars coolant. I will outline the way we do it at the shop. Mainly because it is the best way we’ve found. First some precautions. Only open the cooling system when the engine is cool. Be prepared to catch and dispose (properly) of at least 4 gallons of old coolant. This CANNOT be poured out on the ground or down the sewer, sanitary OR storm! Antifreeze is very toxic to animals and unfortunately quite tasty to them so it must not be uncovered or stored in open containers. I believe it can be taken to places like Autozone or Pep Boys or possibly your local fire station but you must call first to be sure. Next, under normal circumstances, i.e. your thermostat has not been removed for as long as you can remember, you can expect the studs or bolts which hold the thermostat housing on to be stuck to the housing and break off. Big fun! Worst case scenario is that the housing itself breaks but this is pretty rare. Count on breaking a stud or two though. If this happens you will have to drill and tap the broken bolt and possibly install new threads in the head. This job will
