Tech Tips
Let’s talk lubricants, (for your CAR Mikey!). Our #1 most asked lube question is “What kind of oil do I put in my carburetters?”. We find that automatic transmission fluid works best in Zenith-Strombergs and engine oil works best in SU’s. Weights and brands don’t seem to matter. The only variance to this general rule seems to be Series 1 E-types which are equipped with 3-2” SU carbs. I find that a lighter oil works better because the mixture is leaner under hard acceleration and these cars are in no danger of running out of fuel. Heavier oil means more fuel mixture under acceleration which seems to be fine for the other cars. Weber carbs don’t use oil unless they are
equipped with a K&N air filter which gets oiled with their special filter oil when it’s cleaned. While were on the subject, be sure to check your handbook or shop manual when changing transmission oils. Quite a few of the MG’s and Morris’ transmissions use engine oil NOT gear oil! Keep those phone calls and E-mails coming!
